How to Copy, Cut and Paste text and graphics.
You’ve probably seen some of this before.
But do you know about Ctrl + Z ?
In websites, and in word processing, something we do a
lot of is to revise the documents that we create. Some time
deleting, adding to or moving stuff around in the document.
The first thing that we must do is to identify the text that
we want to removed, copied or moved. You do that by
selecting, or highlighting just the text that you want the
action performed on.
Selecting can be done by moving the mouse next to a
beginning point in the text. The mouse cursor should be in
the form of an “I”. Click the left mouse button and move the
mouse through the text that you want to select. It will be
changed in color, for instance black will change to white
and whit to black. When you are at the end of the area of
text, just release the mouse button.
The text remains highlighted. If you hit the backspace key,
everything that is highlighted will be deleted. If you move
the mouse cursor back near the highlighted text it will
change to an arrow. While it is an arrow, if you click the
left mouse button, you can “grab” the text, and with the
mouse drag all the highlighted text to another location. You
will see an indicator that tell you where it will be placed if
you release the mouse button at that point.
Ctrl + C copies while Ctrl + X Cuts. Ctrl + V Pastes
If while the text is still highlighted, you press the Ctrl
key at the same time with the C key it will be copied, Ctrl
plus X will copy it and remove it from existing text. The
“copied” or “cut” text is held in memory until you “paste”
it by first selecting the location by clicking the mouse at
some point on the page and the pressing Ctrl and the V key.
Use the keyboard to Select Text May be more precise.
Another way that I like to use to select text is with the
keyboard instead of the mouse. Using the four arrow keys,
you can position the cursor at the beginning of the text to
be selected, then with the left hand press the shift key and
you can select one character at a time by moving left or
right and one line at a time by moving up or down with each
click or “press and release” of the arrow key. Holding the
arrow key down continuously will keep the selection moving
in that direction until you release it. This seems easier to
me and a little more precise than the mouse.
How to bail out on a dragging operation.
Another little tip is that sometimes you are in the middle
of moving text and change your mind, to get out of the move,
while still holding the left mouse button, just hit the ESC
key and the move will be cancelled. You can then release the
mouse and start again. And last, if you want to select
every thing on the page, Ctrl plus the A key selects all. So
for a quick erase of everything on the page, it only takes
Ctrl + A and press Backspace key. It’s all gone. But if you
made a mistake and didn’t really mean to delete it all and
you forgot to save it remember this one to save the day,
Ctrl + Z will bring it all back!
Hope you enjoyed the refresher and maybe you saw something
new. Until the next time, take care.
